Minnesota Stars Bring Home the Gold: Box Lacrosse

Written by Aime Caines, Minnesota Stars Box Lacrosse Club Director

This summer I gained a greater appreciation for the USBOXLA Nationals after missing it in 2020 as a result of a cancellation from the pandemic. I learned to embrace the moment and celebrate the little things throughout the tournament. It wasn’t as much about winning as it was about watching the players and their families enjoying every element of the box lacrosse game. Win or lose, everyone was having a blast!

Minnesota Stars brought six teams to the tournament consisting of five boys teams and one girls team. The players ranged from 8 years old to graduating seniors and, regardless of age, they all played with the same level of passion. It’s amazing to see the rapid growth of our players over not just the years but the months within a season. This was the first tournament for some of our youngest players and it was striking to see how they improved even within every new game.

2021 USBOXLA Nationals

Hosted in San Jose, is the most competitive Box Lacrosse tournament in America.  It was impressive to see the amount of talent coming to this tournament, from Canada and the US, playing Box Lacrosse in its truest form over three days across three venues in San Jose. The tournament also showcased Team USBOXLA East vs Team USBOXLA West at three age levels. I’m proud to say that The Minnesota Stars had representation on all six teams. The tournament also showcases a College Box Lacrosse Final 4 Tournament which was exciting because USBOXLA brings in College teams to show the younger guys that the game doesn’t stop in high school.

The best thing about Nationals is the joy you see in your players both on and off the field. Whether it’s at the beach burying a teammate in the sand, eating Ramen noodles on a picnic table outside an arena, or celebrating a win after a shootout, they’re having a blast. A lot of kids will probably tell you their favorite part was winning the National Championship, but for me it was seeing the growth of the sport I love and being able to share it with so many great people.
