Goal Setting in the New Year

The new year often brings a sense of renewal and a strong need to set new goals for oneself. Goal setting is something some of the most successful people do, not just athletes. It’s a key indicator in challenging oneself. Have you sat down and figured out what your goals are for the year? Do they seem daunting? Try settings smaller, more attainable goals for yourself at first. Those smaller goals will then lead up to your big goal. For example, do you want to go on to play college lacrosse after high school? Maybe one of your smaller goals is training three times a week. Although this isn’t exactly the same big goal, it is a goal that will help you get to your overall goal! See what we did there?

Goal setting doesn’t have to be this huge scary task. Instead, make it a fun one! Give yourself a small reward for reaching one of your goals. Get with a friend and be accountability partners to help each other stay on track. No matter what your goals are, you won’t get there without writing them down and working towards them. Our True Lacrosse coaching team is here to help you along the way.

Let’s write down our goals for the new year! Grab a sheet of paper and write your answers to each of the following questions.

  1. What is your goal for this year? (Are you trying out for a certain position this year?)
  2. What is one performance goal you would like to achieve? (Score 5 goals this season, have 10 assists per game, play 5 minutes per game, etc.)
  3. What skill are you strongest at that will help you achieve this goal? (Catching, Cradling, Throwing, Scooping)
  4. What drill can you do to improve this skill?
  5. Which skill do you need to improve the most that will help you achieve this goal? (Catching, Cradling, Throwing, Scooping)
  6. How much time will you dedicate every day (outside of practice) to improving the two skills you wrote down? (5 mins, 15 mins, 30 mins, 1 hour, 2 hours, etc.)
  7. How much time will you dedicate to your studies each day? (your education is just as important as your game)
  8. Complete the following sentence:
  9. This season I will dedicate _________ a day to doing _______ and _________ to improve my ________ and _______ skills so that I can play on the ___________ team.
